I was lucky enough to be asked by my daughter's grade one teacher to come in and talk about my writing journey. I explained how I find my ideas, how I write and revise my stories and what the next steps are for publication and I shared a few of my stories.
The most exciting part was talking about idea-finding and practicing with the kids. I shared that sometimes I get an idea from something funny someone says, to a common phrase, a video, or an interesting fact or issue. I also talked about the power of asking questions. To me, the words "What if?" create endless possibilities. With some practice and inspiration, the grade ones came up with some fantastic ideas and were excited to start writing. This class loves to write, and I hope they continue to enjoy it throughout their life.
I had so much fun and was asked to come back again so they could share their stories with me. I can't wait.
They also saw my planning dooles and yet again told me to illustrate. Perhaps I will some day, but I need lots more practice.
