Darcie and her mini donkey.
I write children's books inspired by family, friends, farming, chronic illness, disability and mental health. I fell in love with reading as a child and never imagined that the picture books I read back then could change my life and dreams today.
I have worked as an elementary teacher and preschool teacher for several years. I especially enjoyed working as a substitute teacher after having my three children. Due to my chronic illnesses, including Multiple Sclerosis, I am no longer in the classroom full-time, but it will never stop me from writing and sharing my stories with the world.
I am a busy mom of three. When I am not writing or reading loads of books to my kids and myself, I can be found outside with my growing collection of farm animals.
What I Write
Picture Books
I have always been drawn to humour. I truly believe that humour can reach even the most reluctant readers. It is why I fell in love with reading as a child. I write picture books with humour and heart, lyrical picture books, and character-driven stories with a focus on social-emotional learning. I have also been exploring metafiction. I have manuscripts that deal with chronic illness, mental health, and speech challenges. Fun fact about me: I love superheroes and the farm, which led me to write several manuscripts featuring them. Including my early chapter book.
Novels in Verse
I fell in love with verse as I experimented with my first novel, BEAT AS ONE.
Writing in free verse feels like home to me.
I am currently plotting my second. I am excited to see where it takes me.

Fun Facts
I was tongue tied until I was 21 years old.
Despite being fixed, I often still get asked where I am from due to my unique speech.
Though my speech challenge is different, this book made me cry. It is absolutely beautiful.
I Talk Like a River by Jordan Scott
Illustrated by Sydney Smith

I have been fighting Multiple Sclerosis for 13 years.
I still can't believe that it has been eleven years already. Fighting MS is like riding a rollercoaster. There are lots of ups and downs, but I always try to stay positive.
I wrote a manuscript to explain everything about my invisible illness to my daughter and guess what?
It became a real book!

If I were a book (or two) I would be..
Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall
&
The Hundred-Year Barn
by Patricia MacLachlan
Illustrated by Kenard Pak
These two books represent everything that I believe in and grew up with.
